The Nigerian House of Representatives has come out swinging against the U.S. government’s decision to slash the validity of non-immigrant visas for Nigerians—from 5 years to just 3 months single-entry!
In a passionate session on Tuesday, July 22, Hon. Muhammad Muktar and other lawmakers described the move as unfair, harmful to millions of law-abiding Nigerians, and a huge blow to U.S.-Nigeria relations.
They warned the new rule—effective July 8, 2025—could disrupt academic dreams, business operations, and even family reunions, especially among Nigeria’s vibrant diaspora.
Citing iconic Nigerians like Chimamanda Adichie, Dr. Bennet Omalu, and Uzoma Asagwara, the House reminded the U.S. of our people’s contributions in medicine, tech, arts, and beyond.
Lawmakers are now demanding the U.S. reverses this policy immediately, urging the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Parliamentary Friendship Group to step up diplomatic efforts.
The House also called on the U.S. to adopt a fairer, more respectful approach that reflects decades of cooperation, shared values, and people-to-people ties.
