Renowned Nigerian gospel singer Tope Alabi has joined the debate on whether gospel artists should charge fees for performing in churches. In a recent online interview, she shared her personal experience, revealing that she initially performed without requesting payment. However, she later realized this approach was unsustainable, as many of her band members left due to a lack of financial incentives.

Tope Alabi recounted an incident where she and her 11-member backup crew were collectively paid just N20,000 for a performance, which made her realize that many organizations do not adequately appreciate gospel musicians.

She emphasized the importance of discussing financial terms before accepting invitations to minister, ensuring sustainability for artists and their teams.

Her remarks come amid an ongoing debate, fueled by conflicting views from Apostle Femi Lazarus and singer Timi Dakolo. Apostle Lazarus criticized gospel singers for charging churches, arguing that they should focus on ministry rather than financial gain.

In contrast, Timi Dakolo defended gospel artists, stating that they deserve financial compensation for their work and should not be shamed for charging fees.

As the discussion continues, Tope Alabi’s insights highlight the need for a balanced approach that acknowledges both the spiritual and financial realities of gospel music ministry.
