Nigerian artist Tems announced the cancellation of her upcoming concert in Kigali due to Rwanda’s support for the M23 armed group, which is involved in military actions in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Grammy-winning musician’s decision follows international condemnation of Rwanda’s backing of the M23 group, which recently took control of Goma.

“So I recently promoted my show in Rwanda without realising that there is an ongoing conflict between Rwanda and Congo.

“I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way.

“I simply had no idea this was going on. My heart goes out to those affected,” the singer wrote on her X page on Friday.

Tems’ cancellation of her Kigali concert follows the M23 leaders’ pledge to march towards Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The UK government is reviewing its aid to Rwanda due to its involvement in the crisis. DR Congo accuses Rwanda of military operations to exploit regional mineral resources, supported by a UN report.

Rwanda denies these allegations, with President Paul Kagame asserting military involvement is aimed at dismantling the FDLR group.
