A wave of sorrow swept across the football world on Saturday, July 5, as Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre Silva were laid to rest at an emotional funeral service held at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, Portugal.
The heartbreaking ceremony drew a powerful show of support from the football community, with Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, Joe Gomez, Ryan Gravenberch, and Liverpool head coach Arne Slot all in attendance.
Also present were key figures from Liverpool’s management, including CEO of Football Michael Edwards and Sporting Director Richard Hughes. Portuguese national teammates like Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, and Ruben Neves paid their final respects to the late duo.
The tragic crash that claimed the lives of 28-year-old Jota and 25-year-old Andre Silva occurred just past midnight on a highway near Zamora, Spain, as the brothers traveled to catch a ferry to England. Jota was set to return to Liverpool following a summer break.
Just two weeks before the tragedy, Jota had married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three beautiful children. The football world continues to mourn the loss of one of its brightest stars.
