The Super Eagles of Nigeria and their officials have boycotted training in Rabat, Morocco, just days before their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff semifinal against Gabon, citing unresolved issues with unpaid allowances and bonuses.
The squad, including backroom staff, refused to train on Tuesday, highlighting long-standing financial grievances with football authorities, according to veteran BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji.
In a joint statement, the team confirmed: “The full squad including officials withheld from training today in Morocco because of the unresolved issues with outstanding payments. The Super Eagles are awaiting a quick resolution to continue preparations for Thursday’s game with Gabon.”
The protest comes at a critical time, with Nigeria seeking a victory to secure a spot in the playoff final against either Cameroon or DR Congo, keeping their hopes alive for a FIFA World Cup 2026 berth. Fans have reacted strongly online, urging swift resolution to ensure the team can focus on the pitch.
