Nigerian music executive Soso Soberekon has revealed that Grammy-winning artist Beyoncé was nearly featured on KCee’s 2013 hit song, “Limpopo.”
Despite her absence, the song became a major success. During an interview with Daddy Freeze, Soso, KCee’s former producer, shared how they worked to secure a collaboration with Beyoncé’s team, stating that “Limpopo” was originally intended to include both KCee and the global superstar.
“There was a billionaire who wanted to bring Beyoncé to Nigeria. He does not know anything about entertainment, so he asked us to follow him to New York, that we were going to do a song with Beyoncé after negotiation.
“We then went to Jay-Z’s club looking for information on getting Beyoncé’s contact. We now finally got an agent to discuss the Beyoncé deal. The deal is she would come to Nigeria to do a concert, meet and greet, and do a song with a Nigerian artiste called KCee. So they said they will get back to us.”
Soso explained that the urgency of securing Beyoncé’s collaboration led them to quickly record “Limpopo” after returning to Nigeria.
He said, “So, we came back, and the man asked us to do a song that will feature Beyoncé. So, in the hope of doing a song with Beyoncé, that is how we recorded the song, thinking Beyoncé would be on the song. So it was a fluke, not knowing that we knew it was going to be a hit.”
Beyoncé’s team ultimately failed to come to Nigeria, causing the anticipated collaboration to fall through despite their dedicated efforts. Soso recalled their disappointment upon receiving the news but emphasized that they still went ahead with releasing “Limpopo.”
He said, “So, then the agent called us to break our hearts, informing us that Beyoncé would not sleep in Nigeria but in Ghana. We could not meet her in Ghana because the main deal was for her to come to Nigeria for a show; the song feature was just a promise. The next thing we knew, we released the song, and it was a hit.”
