Social commentator Reno Omokri has sparked heated reactions after calling out footballers, entertainers, and artistes who end up broke in their old age and shift the blame to the government. According to Reno, such a mindset is nothing but “mental laziness” and a failure to take responsibility.
In a post shared on his X handle, he stressed that athletes and entertainers cannot enjoy the fruits of their fame and fortune privately, only to later outsource their failures to society. He explained that unless they serve as civil servants—like Joe Lasisi of the Nigerian Customs Service, who earned both his salary and benefits—they are not entitled to pensions or government support.
Reno further noted that while some stars receive gifts, money, and property after representing the nation, what they do with those fortunes is entirely their responsibility. He highlighted examples like Paul Gascoigne and Trevor Sinclair, former English footballers who lost millions but never blamed the government.
Omokri insisted that blaming the public or government after wasting wealth is immature and entitled thinking. He concluded that many of these stars should have been guided by financial experts to manage their success and plan for retirement, instead of turning into “objects of ridicule.”
