Veteran Spanish manager Rafa Benitez is reportedly making a sensational return to football as he prepares to take charge of Greek giants Panathinaikos, in what’s set to be a record-breaking move for Greek football.
According to reports, the former Liverpool, Chelsea, and Real Madrid boss has agreed to a two-year contract worth £3.47 million, making him the highest-paid manager in the history of Greek football. The 64-year-old Spaniard has been out of management since March 2024 after parting ways with Celta Vigo, leaving them just two points above the relegation zone.
Benitez, who boasts an impressive managerial career spanning over 16 clubs, is now set for his 17th role in the dugout. His decorated CV includes major triumphs — two La Liga titles and a UEFA Cup with Valencia, Champions League and FA Cup glory with Liverpool, and Europa League success with Chelsea.
Reports suggest negotiations were finalized in London with Panathinaikos president Giannis Alafouzos, as the club aims to reclaim domestic dominance after last winning the Greek Super League in 2010. Panathinaikos currently sit seventh in the league but hope Benitez’s arrival sparks a revival.
