Global tension has escalated once again as Russian President Vladimir Putin has directed his top officials to draft proposals for potential nuclear weapons testing, following a recent statement by U.S. President Donald Trump declaring that the United States would resume nuclear tests for the first time in over three decades.

Speaking during a meeting with Russia’s Security Council on Wednesday, November 5, Putin reaffirmed that Russia has honored its obligations under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) but warned that if the U.S. or any other nuclear power resumes testing, Russia will respond “appropriately and adequately.”

Russia’s Defence Minister, Andrei Belousov, supported the president’s stance, stressing that America’s rapid modernization of strategic weapons justifies Russia’s readiness to conduct “full-scale nuclear tests.” He added that Russia’s Arctic test site at Novaya Zemlya is fully capable of hosting such tests on short notice — a move that could reignite Cold War-era nuclear tensions after a 35-year moratorium.

Putin officially instructed the Foreign Ministry, Defence Ministry, and intelligence agencies to gather intelligence, assess global developments, and prepare detailed recommendations for potential testing operations.

Trump’s announcement last week that the U.S. would resume nuclear testing “on an equal basis with Russia and China” has sparked worldwide alarm. While U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright later clarified that the tests would not include actual nuclear detonations, Trump has continued to accuse Russia and China of secretly conducting underground low-yield tests.

With both nations now seemingly on the brink of a new nuclear standoff, fears are rising that the fragile global balance of power could be entering a dangerous new phase.
