In celebration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address a special joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 12. The historic event, which commemorates the iconic June 12, 1993 presidential election—widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest—will be held at the House of Representatives Chamber by 11 AM, with the president expected to arrive at 12 noon.
According to a statement released by Akin Rotimi, spokesperson for the House of Representatives, this year’s celebration is themed: “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
The president will not only deliver a powerful address to lawmakers but also confer national honours on selected legislators for their service to democracy. The session will also feature goodwill messages from past presiding officers of the National Assembly, highlighting the institution’s role in protecting Nigeria’s democratic values and pushing for national growth.
This event marks another milestone in the country’s 26-year journey of uninterrupted civilian rule.
