Authorities in Spain say they are nearing the conclusion of their investigation into the devastating crash that claimed the lives of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva. The fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning on the A-52 motorway in Zamora, northern Spain, and an official update is expected in the coming days.
The brothers were traveling in a £180,000 acid green Lamborghini Huracan when the vehicle reportedly blew a tyre while overtaking another car near Cernadilla. The car veered sharply off the road and smashed into a crash barrier. Investigators from the Guardia Civil are currently working to determine the vehicle’s speed at the time of the incident and which of the brothers was behind the wheel.
Sources say the A-52 highway is known for its poor condition and dangerous layout. Local traffic head Alfonso Ibáñez has highlighted the stretch as “notoriously treacherous,” with multiple fatalities already recorded there this year. Road surface inspections, crash barrier evaluations, and tyre failure analyses are underway.
The brothers were en route to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK. Diogo had reportedly been advised against flying due to a recent lung surgery. Just days earlier, he had married his longtime love, Rute, in Porto.
