In a major policy shake-up, OpenAI has officially updated its ChatGPT Usage Policy, placing strict limits on how the AI can be used. The new guidelines, effective October 29, now ban ChatGPT from giving professional advice in fields that require certification — such as medicine, law, or finance.
According to the new rules, users are forbidden from seeking or providing consultations that need professional licensing, facial recognition without consent, or using the tool to make critical life decisions in areas like housing, education, and employment. Academic misconduct and grade manipulation are also off-limits.
OpenAI clarified that these changes are meant to protect users and prevent misuse of AI. ChatGPT is now officially positioned as an “educational tool,” not a consultant.
The update also means no more naming medications, giving dosages, investment tips, or legal templates — as OpenAI moves to reduce liability risks.
