The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has officially called off its one-week nationwide warning strike, initially set to end on Tuesday. This was confirmed on Saturday by the union’s Assistant Secretary-General, Chidi Aligwe, following a virtual National Executive Council meeting.
Aligwe stated clearly, “The strike has been suspended. Nurses and midwives are to resume duty immediately.” This decision comes just a day after the union publicly distanced itself from a claim by Health Minister Prof. Mohammad Pate, who had earlier announced the strike’s suspension prematurely.
Recall that the strike, which began on July 30, was a protest against poor wages, unpaid allowances, severe staff shortages, and unsafe working conditions in healthcare facilities across Nigeria.
