On Democracy Day, June 12, Nigerians across the country hit the streets to demand an end to economic hardship and push for improved governance.

Pro-democracy activists and civil society groups gathered under the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos, waving placards and banners as they chanted for change. A similar protest also took place in Akure, Ondo State, where citizens voiced frustration over the rising cost of living and lack of accountability.

The Take It Back Movement, one of the key organisers, shared videos of the peaceful demonstrations online, fueling nationwide conversations. In Lagos, heavy police presence from the Nigeria Police Force Area F Division was seen as demonstrators assembled early Thursday morning.

The protests mark growing dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s leadership, as citizens use Democracy Day to remind the government of its unfulfilled promises.
