A heartbreaking story has emerged from Jos, Nigeria, where a bride-to-be, Patience Addra, had her wedding canceled just a day before the ceremony, sparking a wave of reactions across social media. The wedding, scheduled for Saturday, April 5, was called off on Friday, leaving many in shock. Patience, in a subtle yet emotional post on the wedding day, wrote: “Online family (in-laws), well-done. If you follow social media saga, you go kpai before your time,” hinting at the intense scrutiny and online buzz surrounding the situation.
Reports circulating online claim that the wedding was halted due to a disagreement over the couple’s future church attendance. Patience, a devoted Catholic, reportedly expressed her desire to continue attending her church after marriage. Her groom, however, insisted they attend his church, COCIN (Church of Christ in Nations), influenced by his mother’s strong stance.
According to Jos-based writer Paul Kums, during a final marriage counseling session, tensions escalated when the bride’s response clashed with the groom’s expectations. The groom later informed his mother, who allegedly demanded the wedding be canceled unless Patience agreed to switch churches. Despite later agreeing to attend COCIN, the mother-in-law refused to budge, ultimately leading to the heartbreaking cancellation.
The drama has since gone viral, with Nigerians split between sympathizing with the bride and criticizing the influence of parents in adult relationships. Many are praising Patience for her bravery, while others are calling for deeper conversations around religious tolerance and parental interference in marriages.
