In a much-anticipated move that has sparked excitement across Nigeria, the Federal Government has officially begun the payment of N44,000 arrears to former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This development comes after the government’s recent upward review of corps members’ monthly allowance from N33,000 to N77,000.
The payment is being issued as retrospective arrears to those who completed their service before the new rate took effect in March 2025. Though they’ve already passed out of the program, these former corps members are now reaping the benefits of the revised minimum wage.
Confirming the development, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, the Director-General of NYSC, emphasized the government’s commitment to honoring its financial obligations. He noted that payments will be credited directly to the bank accounts of all eligible ex-corps members, as their details are already with the NYSC database.
Meanwhile, multiple ex-corps members have taken to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share screenshots and express gratitude, with many describing the unexpected payment as “a timely blessing.”
This gesture has not only restored faith in government promises but has also sparked nationwide conversations about the power of retroactive policy implementation.
