There was drama at the Federal High Court in Abuja as political activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was reportedly arrested by armed policemen shortly after appearing in court in solidarity with detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred on Thursday, October 23, moments after Sowore stepped out of the court premises. The outspoken activist, who has been at the forefront of the #FreeNnamdiKanu campaign, was surrounded by security operatives who insisted he must accompany them to the FCT Police Command.
When asked about the reason for the arrest, one of the officers allegedly stated that they were acting under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, saying, “The commissioner said we should bring you to the office.”
Sowore, however, questioned why no formal invitation letter was issued and insisted that his lawyer accompany him as he was led away in a police van.
This arrest comes just days after the activist participated in a protest demanding Kanu’s release — a demonstration that led to the arrest and remand of 12 others, including Kanu’s brother Emmanuel and lawyer Alloy Ejimakor.
