Afrobeats superstar D’banj is making waves once again — this time in the legal arena — as he confirms that his legal team has reached out to Latin music legend Marc Anthony over the unauthorised sampling of his iconic 2012 hit, “Oliver Twist.”
Speaking on Adesope Live, D’banj shared his initial excitement upon hearing a Latin-flavoured version of his global smash featured as the title track of Marc Anthony’s 2024 album “Muevense”. However, the excitement quickly turned serious when he discovered the song had been released without clearance or permission.
“Marc Anthony sampling my song was a huge moment — but he didn’t reach out before using it, and it wasn’t cleared,” D’banj said. “I was happy because of who he is, but my legal team had to step in. I know they’re going high with this one.”
While he praised Marc Anthony’s artistry, D’banj emphasized the importance of respecting intellectual property in the music business, especially when financial gains are involved.
“God works in mysterious ways. I don hammer!” D’banj added with a smile.
