The 2023 Nollywood film *Gangs of Lagos* has sparked renewed discussions following a court ruling ordering its producers and streaming platform, Amazon Prime, to apologize to the Isale Eko Descendants Union.
The ruling stems from the movie’s portrayal of the Isale Eko community and the Eyo masquerade, which many considered misleading.
Nearly two years after the Isale Eko Descendants Union initiated legal action, Justice Idowu Alakija approved a settlement agreement. The controversy arose from a scene in which assassins disguised themselves as Eyo masqueraders, prompting backlash from cultural leaders and the Lagos State government.
The settlement terms mandate the filmmakers to issue a formal apology for misrepresenting Isale Eko as a hub for criminals and for distorting the cultural significance of the Eyo masquerade. Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Chairman of the Isale Eko Descendants Union, Adeniji Kazeem, confirmed that the case has been resolved amicably.
