Heartbreaking news has emerged about Chelsea’s first-ever Black footballer, Paul Canoville, who is currently hospitalised following a serious deterioration in his physical health. The 63-year-old icon, who played for the Blues from 1981 to 1986 and was instrumental in their Second Division title win in 1983-84, is now facing a critical health battle that’s also affecting his mental well-being.

A statement from the CEO of the Paul Canoville Foundation confirmed the sad development, urging fans and friends to respect his privacy as he focuses on recovery. “Paul is currently in hospital due to a serious decline in his physical health, which has also taken a significant toll on his mental well-being,” the statement read. “He remains determined but he now needs time, care, and space to recover.”

Canoville’s absence from recent appearances, including the Show Racism the Red Card reception at Downing Street, and the premiere of a documentary about his life, has left fans devastated.

Throughout his career, Paul Canoville was not only a pioneer but a fighter — enduring horrific racist abuse from his own Chelsea supporters, including being called the N-word and having bananas thrown at him. Despite it all, he never gave up. In a 2023 interview, he passionately said: “If you want to keep this game alive, you’ve got to deal with this… Young Black players shouldn’t be quiet.”

Canoville’s bravery both on and off the pitch has inspired generations. Now, he needs our support more than ever.
