The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has fiercely criticized Prophet Jeremiah Fufeyin, General Overseer of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry, for claiming that giving a first fruit offering can wipe away sins, even for fraudsters. The controversial sermon, though delivered in 2022, resurfaced on social media, sparking outrage.
Fufeyin, popularly known as Papa J, preached that first fruit offerings possess such divine power that they can cancel sins, break spiritual protocols, and attract miraculous blessings. He even likened such offerings to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, stating that “even if you’re a fraudster, first fruit will bring you forgiveness.”
CAN has dismissed the claim as heresy, describing it as dangerous and unbiblical. The association warned Nigerians to beware of preachers with dubious theological backgrounds who manipulate innocent followers. In the words of CAN’s National Director for Social Welfare, Abimbola Ayuba, “God is not fraudulent. He doesn’t share booty with crooks.”
Lagos CAN Chairman, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, also condemned the teaching, calling it misleading and a misinterpretation of scripture. He challenged Fufeyin to provide biblical proof and warned that such doctrines could lead people to sin freely, thinking their sins will be erased annually through offering.
Despite calls for clarification, Prophet Fufeyin has yet to respond. A woman who picked up a call to the church’s official line deflected questions, advising critics to visit the church for the “real message.”
As this clip continues to circulate online, critics have reignited debates about the commercialization of faith, especially as Fufeyin has previously faced backlash over selling miracle soaps and oils. In 2024, NAFDAC even launched investigations into some of his spiritual products.
CAN is now calling on Nigerians to stay alert, read their Bibles, and avoid being deceived by self-styled preachers promising shortcuts to salvation through money.
