The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has come out strongly against the Federal Government, demanding urgent and decisive action over the horrific killings that have left over 200 people dead in Benue State. In a powerful statement released on Monday, June 16, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh described the tragedy as a senseless bloodbath that exposes the government’s failure to protect its citizens.
“For too long, the people of Benue have endured brutal attacks without justice or proper intervention,” the statement read. CAN condemned the impunity and silence that has become the norm after such atrocities and insisted on swift prosecution of those behind the killings.
The body urged the immediate deployment of reinforced security to vulnerable communities, and didn’t rule out declaring a state of emergency in the hardest-hit regions. “This cycle of unchecked violence must stop,” Okoh said, warning that the government’s inaction is emboldening criminals.
CAN also called for a thorough, transparent investigation and asked the international community to assist in peacebuilding and humanitarian efforts in Benue.
Archbishop Okoh reaffirmed CAN’s dedication to justice, unity, and the sanctity of life, calling on Nigerians to stand together in these dark times and pray for peace, healing, and a new dawn in Benue.
