Veteran Nigerian rapper and activist Ruggedman has sparked conversations online after sharing his honest thoughts about the future of Nigerian music and the “Afrobeats” label.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds, the rap legend, whose real name is Michael Ugochukwu Stephens, expressed doubt that the “Afrobeats” tag will stand the test of time. According to him, “I just have a feeling that this whole Afrobeats thing, the tag might end soon.”
While he celebrated the global recognition Nigerian artists are now enjoying, Ruggedman admitted he’s not entirely pleased with the quality of songs being released, saying many lack the depth and creativity he once admired in the industry.
He also highlighted the sharp contrast between Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat and today’s Afrobeats, stressing that merging both under one label doesn’t do justice to Nigeria’s rich musical heritage.
The rapper further lamented the decline of rap music in Nigeria, blaming the chase for quick fame and money. “Rap has taken a backseat because people want what pays fast,” he said.
Ruggedman urged the industry to stop seeking foreign validation and simply embrace the pride of calling it Nigerian music.
