Veteran Nigerian comedian Alibaba has stirred major conversation online after sharing his perspective on polygamy, describing it as both culturally significant and practically beneficial in modern society.
In an interview with media personality Nedu, the comedy legend explained that polygamy, when handled maturely, can actually help promote peace, stability, and cooperation within a household. According to him, having more than one wife sometimes reduces conflict and helps maintain balance at home.
He said, “Some people believe if it’s only one wife, it can be difficult to control her. But if a wife knows there’s another woman in the picture, she tends to calm down because she understands she’s not the only one.”
Alibaba also referenced traditional practices in places like Ibadan, where some women in the past encouraged their husbands to marry more wives to avoid infidelity and protect family unity. He shared an example of a woman who even helped her husband take another wife to prevent him from seeking extramarital affairs.
The comedian further explained that, culturally, polygamy once served a social function — for instance, when widows with young children were married by a brother-in-law to ensure their well-being.
While acknowledging that polygamy isn’t for everyone, Alibaba maintained that it still holds value in certain contexts and shouldn’t always be seen in a negative light.
