Dino Melaye claims Tinubu’s government might soon borrow from Opay and Moniepoint

Former senator Dino Melaye has thrown a fresh jab at President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing the government of reckless borrowing and wasteful spending.

Speaking on ARISE Television, Melaye said Nigeria is sinking deeper into hunger and poverty while billions of dollars are being borrowed. He questioned why Tinubu’s government is seeking $1.7 billion from the World Bank, while the Senate has already approved over $21 billion in loans.

Mocking the government’s financial decisions, Melaye ridiculed the purchase of a yacht, claiming it has “never sailed in Nigeria’s waters but between Monaco and Paris.” He warned that at this rate, “we won’t be surprised if the government starts borrowing from fintechs like Opay and Moniepoint.”

His remarks come after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) raised alarm that Tinubu’s borrowing spree could push Nigeria’s debt beyond ₦200 trillion before year-end, accusing the administration of mortgaging the nation’s future under the guise of “economic reform.”
