Nigeria’s Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) has kicked off with massive excitement, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) revealed that over 69,000 Nigerians pre-registered online within just seven hours of the portal going live.
In a statement released on Monday, August 18, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed that the registration portal opened at 8:30 a.m., and by 3:30 p.m., a staggering 69,376 entries had already been recorded.
Breaking down the numbers, Olumekun disclosed that 33,803 registrants (48.7%) are male, while 35,573 (51.3%) are female. Even more interesting, 48,033 registrants, making up 69.2%, are youths between the ages of 18 and 34, proving once again that young Nigerians are taking charge of shaping the nation’s democratic future.
He explained that the registration portal (https://cvr.inecnigeria.org
) is open 24/7, allowing Nigerians to register anytime and anywhere. However, physical registration will also begin on Monday, August 25, 2025, across 811 state and local government offices, running from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays. This will cater to those who prefer in-person enrollment or need to complete their online registration.
INEC also assured citizens of weekly updates on the CVR, with detailed statistics covering state, gender, occupation, age, and disability. Olumekun reminded Nigerians that only those 18 years and above who have never registered are eligible, warning that double or multiple registration is illegal. However, transfers and replacement of lost or damaged voter cards are fully allowed.
Clearly, Nigerians—especially the youth—are ready to make their voices count in the coming elections.
