“Nigeria Was Practically Dead Before Tinubu Took Over” – Wike Defends President, Warns Church Against 2027 Mistake

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stirred major conversation following his bold remarks during a thanksgiving service at Saint James’ Anglican Church, Asokoro, Abuja, on Sunday, July 6. Speaking after the commissioning of 16 projects in the FCT, Wike declared that Nigeria was “practically dead” before President Bola Tinubu assumed office, insisting that only bold and difficult decisions can revive the nation.

According to Wike, the country had been so mismanaged that it would be unrealistic to expect miracles in just two years. “The country was dead. It takes hard decisions to bring it back to life. You don’t just pray and say ‘be healed’—it doesn’t work like that,” he said.

He went further to caution Christian leaders and church members against allowing emotions or propaganda to cloud their political judgment in the 2027 elections. Wike criticized the support for Labour Party’s Peter Obi in 2023, calling it a near-mistake driven by sentiment and misinformation. “Ask politicians hard questions. Don’t let them mislead you. Peter Obi was governor for eight years and never conducted local government elections. That’s not democracy,” he added.

Wike emphasized that Nigerians need to evaluate politicians based on their past performance, not promises. “If I say I want to rescue Nigeria, ask me what I did when I had power. I have results from Rivers State, and now as FCT Minister, I’m delivering again.”

His statement has since gone viral, sparking heated discussions about leadership, accountability, and voter awareness ahead of 2027.
