U.S. House Bans WhatsApp on Government Devices Over Major Security Concerns

In a bold move that has sparked widespread debate, the U.S. House of Representatives has officially banned WhatsApp from all government-issued devices, citing serious cybersecurity threats. The directive, announced via an internal memo from the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, classifies WhatsApp as a “high-risk” application.

The Office of Cybersecurity raised red flags over WhatsApp’s lack of data transparency, inadequate encryption for stored data, and potential vulnerabilities that could expose sensitive information to unauthorized access. As a result, lawmakers and staff have been ordered to immediately uninstall WhatsApp and switch to more secure alternatives like Microsoft Teams, Amazon’s Wickr, Signal, iMessage, and FaceTime.

WhatsApp responded strongly, stating, “We disagree with this decision in the strongest possible terms,” defending its use of end-to-end encryption and insisting it offers industry-leading security.

This isn’t the first time the House has cracked down on digital platforms—TikTok was banned in 2022 over similar national security concerns. The WhatsApp ban further signals a growing U.S. government push to tighten control over data privacy and cyber threats.
