Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has made it clear that Nigeria’s national team is laser-focused on two major goals—winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and booking a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a recent interview with the Saudi Pro League in Ar Rass, the commanding defender spoke passionately about what it means to wear the captain’s armband for one of Africa’s biggest footballing nations.
“It’s something very special for me to be captain,” Troost-Ekong shared. “But it also comes with responsibility. Nigeria is a massive football country, blessed with endless talent. Yet, we’ve underachieved in recent years, and that needs to change.”
The former Watford star expressed immense belief in the current crop of Super Eagles players, calling them “extremely talented” and “driven.” Reflecting on their narrow miss at the last AFCON, Troost-Ekong said the team has grown stronger and more determined.
“I’m fully enjoying this journey and giving it my all. With this group of players, the mission is clear: bring the AFCON trophy home and make it to the 2026 World Cup.”
