The Benue State Police Command has firmly denied circulating reports claiming that herdsmen launched a fresh attack in Wannue Town, Tarka Local Government Area, on the night of Friday, June 20.
According to a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, the viral claims are completely false and misleading. She clarified that no herdsmen were involved in any violent incident in the area, urging the public to disregard the unverified narrative.
Instead, DSP Edet revealed that at around 8 p.m. on June 21, a man identified as Aondohemba Yayough was shot dead along Akume Road in Wannue. Upon investigation, the assailant was named as Saater Aii, a known ex-convict.
Local vigilantes managed to disarm the suspect, but he fled the scene before he could be arrested. Two other individuals were injured in the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment. Police have recovered the AK-47 rifle used in the attack and are actively working to track down the fugitive.
Authorities are urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to rely only on official updates for accurate news.
