Tensions exploded in the heart of Lower Manhattan on Tuesday, June 10, as more than 80 protesters were arrested during a massive demonstration against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities. The fiery protest kicked off at Foley Square and quickly spread to Federal Plaza, with thousands flooding the streets in a powerful show of defiance.
The crowd rallied against what many are calling harsh and unjust immigration raids across New York and the nation. As night fell, the energy turned intense — NYPD officers clashed with protesters, arrests were made, and pepper spray was used in multiple confrontations. Videos circulating online show demonstrators blocking ICE vehicles, breaching barricades, and chanting “Abolish ICE” with unwavering passion.
Many of those arrested were charged with disorderly conduct, while others faced detainment for refusing to disperse or allegedly throwing objects at law enforcement. The NYPD even declared a Level Three Mobilization, bringing in extra forces to manage the unrest.
Brooklyn Councilwoman Shahana Hanif and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams both spoke at the protest, blasting Mayor Eric Adams for supporting federal immigration tactics. “He’s turning his back on working class people,” Hanif said. Williams added, “Mayor Adams is missing in action in a city built by immigrants.”
Mayor Adams later responded, emphasizing law and order, saying that such chaos “won’t be tolerated in our city” and praising the NYPD’s readiness.
The protest in NYC was just one of many — similar demonstrations erupted in Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco, underscoring the growing national outrage over immigration enforcement and how it’s playing out in local communities.
