Liverpool’s defensive rock, Virgil van Dijk, has made it crystal clear a return to the Eredivisie is not in his plans. In a candid interview with Voetbal International, the 33-year-old Dutch international stated:

“I will not return to the Netherlands. I started here, and that was very important to me. But finishing in the Eredivisie is not an option.”

Van Dijk kicked off his career at Willem II before making his professional debut at Groningen. His impressive rise continued in 2013 with a move to Scottish giants Celtic, where he won back-to-back league titles. In 2015, he stepped into the Premier League spotlight with Southampton, paving the way for a record-breaking £75 million move to Liverpool in 2018.

At Anfield, Van Dijk has cemented his status as one of the world’s best defenders — winning the Champions League, Premier League, and even finishing second in the Ballon d’Or in 2019. Now, with a legacy built across Europe’s biggest stages, Van Dijk is focused on writing his final chapters outside the Dutch league.
