Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo is once again making headlines not for a goal, but for a bold statement that’s sparking intense debate among fans and pundits. Speaking ahead of the Nations League final between Portugal and Spain in Munich, the 40-year-old Al Nassr striker shared his firm belief about who deserves the Ballon d’Or.

“In my opinion, the award should go to a player whose team has won trophies especially the UEFA Champions League,” Ronaldo stated. “That’s what really counts.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s remark has reignited the age-old discussion about whether individual brilliance should outweigh team success in deciding the world’s top footballer.

The Ballon d’Or, first awarded in 1956, honors the player deemed best over the previous season but Ronaldo believes trophies should weigh heavily in that decision.
