Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has stirred up major conversation after stating that petrol is still cheap in Nigeria, despite public outcry over soaring fuel prices. Speaking at the launch of the Deep Sea Port Access Road reconstruction in Lagos, the billionaire industrialist compared Nigeria’s fuel prices to those in other West African nations — and the difference is shocking!

According to Dangote, “Some Nigerians believe that petrol at less than ₦900 per litre is expensive, but in reality, there’s no country in West Africa where fuel costs less than $1 (₦1,600) per litre.” He emphasized that Nigeria remains one of the most affordable markets for petrol in the region.

He also praised recent improvements in fuel availability, saying, “There are no more fuel queues. Most filling stations that were previously shut down are now fully operational. Shortages are over — and they’re not coming back.”

Amid rising frustrations over fuel prices ranging from ₦800 to over ₦1,000 per litre, Dangote’s comments have sparked mixed reactions — with some praising his bold perspective, while others call for more empathy.

To cap off the event, he revealed that the road leading to the Dangote Refinery has been named after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in recognition of the government’s support.
