Award-winning actress Viola Davis revealed she initially misjudged Chadwick Boseman’s behavior while filming Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, unaware of his private health struggles.
In an interview with The Times on Friday, she reflected on working with Boseman in his final film role before his passing. She recalled observing the special care he received, including back rubs from his girlfriend and meditative music, and initially questioned why he needed such attention.
“There was a part of me that was a little judgmental—why do you need all that? Little did I know that they were doing it because he was dying,” Davis said.
During the filming of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in 2019, Chadwick Boseman was privately battling stage IV colon cancer, a diagnosis he had kept secret since it progressed from stage III in 2016. He passed away on August 28, 2020, at 43.
Viola Davis, reflecting on his legacy, praised his dedication to acting, describing him as a “beautiful man and artist” with rare commitment.
Her remarks emphasize Boseman’s silent struggle and enduring impact.
