A 200-level Mass Communication student at the University of Ilorin, identified only as a resident of Oke-odo, Tanke, Ilorin, reportedly took his own life due to economic hardship.
The student ingested a poisonous substance at his residence last week while his roommate was away attending lectures, according to reports.
“We just returned to find a suicidal note that explained his inability to cope again and decided to take the substance and d!ed,” a friend who preferred anonymity stated.
The student, with a 4.5 CGPA, was reportedly struggling with financial difficulties, worsened by the current economic climate.
Sponsored by his widowed mother, he had been facing financial challenges since last year. His father passed away years ago, leaving his retired mother responsible for his education.
“We have been assisting in our own little way by contributing some funds for his tuition fees and buying foodstuff for him,” he said.
A senior officer at the university confirmed the tragic incident, describing it as shocking and sad to journalists in Ilorin.
